María José Sáenz de Buruaga Gómez (born June 4, 1968) is an important Spanish politician. She is currently the President of Cantabria, a region in northern Spain. She started this big job in 2023.
Before becoming President, María José was also the Vice President of Cantabria. She also served as the Regional Minister for Health and Social Services. She has been a key member of the People's Party (PP) for many years.

Becoming a Politician
María José Sáenz de Buruaga began her political journey in 1991. She joined the People's Party of Cantabria.
Early Roles in Local Government
In 1995, María José was chosen as a councilor in the Suances City Council. A councilor is like a local representative. She spoke for her political group there until 2007. She also led the local party group in Suances from 1996 to 2010.
Serving in the Regional Parliament
María José also became a member of the Parliament of Cantabria in 1999. The Parliament is where laws are made for the region. She was re-elected several times, serving in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015. From 2003 to 2011, she was the main speaker for her party on topics like health and social services.
She also held a high position within her party. She became the general secretary of the People's Party in Cantabria in 2004. She kept this role in 2008 and 2012.
Vice President and Health Minister
From 2011 to 2015, María José had two very important jobs. She was the Vice President of the Government of Cantabria. At the same time, she was the Minister for Health and Social Services. This meant she was in charge of healthcare and social support for the people of Cantabria.
During her time as Health Minister, she helped improve important services. For example, she oversaw the completion of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital. She also helped create a special center in Laredo for children and teenagers. This center focused on preventing family violence.
After the 2015 elections, her party lost its majority. She then became the second vice president of the Parliament of Cantabria. She had held this position before, from 2003 to 2011.
President of Cantabria
In May 2023, María José Sáenz de Buruaga's party won the regional elections. On July 3, 2023, the Parliament of Cantabria chose her as the new President. This was a historic moment for the region. She became the first woman ever to be the President of Cantabria.
She officially started her role on July 5, 2023. The ceremony took place at the San Rafael Hospital, which is where the Parliament of Cantabria is located.
