Starting in Politics
María José Sáenz de Buruaga joined the People's Party of Cantabria in 1991. This was her first step into politics. In 1995, she became a councilor in her hometown, Suances. A councilor helps run the local city. She was the main speaker for her group there until 2007.
She also led the local party board in Suances from 1996 to 2010. In 1999, she became a member of the Parliament of Cantabria. This is like a regional government assembly. She was re-elected several times, serving until 2015. From 2003 to 2011, she focused on health and social services issues in the Parliament.
Important Roles in Government
From 2011 to 2015, María José had two very important jobs. She was the Vice President of Cantabria. At the same time, she was the Minister for Health and Social Services. This meant she was in charge of healthcare and social programs for the whole region.
During her time as Minister, she helped improve the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital. She also created a special center in Laredo. This center helps children and teenagers. It was the first of its kind in Cantabria to prevent family violence.
After the 2015 elections, her party lost its majority. She then became the second Vice President of the Parliament of Cantabria. She had held this position before, from 2003 to 2011.
Becoming President of Cantabria
In May 2023, her party won the regional elections. On July 3, the Parliament of Cantabria chose her as the new President. She officially started her role on July 5, 2023.
