Ignacio Diego (full name: Juan Ignacio Diego Palacios) was born on May 18, 1960, in Castro Urdiales, a town in Cantabria, Spain. He is a Spanish politician and a member of the People's Party. From 2011 to 2015, he served as the President of Cantabria. Cantabria is one of Spain's 17 special areas called autonomous regions, which have their own governments.
Ignacio Diego's Time as President
Ignacio Diego became the President of Cantabria after his political party, the People's Party (PP), won a lot of votes. In the regional elections held on May 22, 2011, his party won an absolute majority. This means they got more than half of the seats in the Parliament of Cantabria, allowing them to form the government easily.
Leading the Atlantic Arc Commission
Besides leading Cantabria, Ignacio Diego also had an important international role. He was chosen to be the President of the Atlantic Arc Commission (AAC). This group is made up of 26 different regions from countries like France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom. These regions are all located along the Atlantic coast of Europe.
Diego was elected to this position at a meeting held in 2012. He and Cantabria led the AAC for two years, from 2012 to 2014. Before him, the French region of Lower Normandy had been in charge of the commission. The Atlantic Arc Commission works to help these coastal regions cooperate on important issues like shipping, environment, and economic development.
