María Trinidad Sánchez was a brave Dominican woman. She was born in Santo Domingo on May 16, 1794. She is known as a hero of the Dominican War of Independence. She helped her country gain freedom from Spanish rule.

Fighting for Freedom

María Trinidad Sánchez was a freedom fighter. She worked with a group of people who wanted the Dominican Republic to be independent. She helped them by carrying important messages. This made her a key part of the "rebel side."

She also helped design the Dominican flag. She worked with Concepción Bona, Isabel Sosa, and María de Jesús Pina to create this important national symbol.

Her Brave Sacrifice

María Trinidad Sánchez was arrested because of her work for independence. She was asked to tell the names of her friends who were also fighting for freedom. But she was very brave and refused to betray them. Because she would not tell on her friends, she was killed on February 27, 1846. She died a hero, protecting her fellow freedom fighters.

Her Lasting Legacy

Today, María Trinidad Sánchez is remembered as a national hero. A whole area of the Dominican Republic, called the María Trinidad Sánchez Province, is named after her. This shows how important she was to her country.

Her remains are kept in a special place called the National Pantheon of the Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo. This is where many of the country's greatest heroes are honored.
