María Trinidad Sánchez is a province in the Dominican Republic. It is located in the northeastern part of the country. The province stretches along the beautiful Atlantic coast. Its main city and capital is Nagua.

This province was created in 1958. Before that, it was a municipality within the Samaná province.

Who Was María Trinidad Sánchez?

The province is named after a very important woman, María Trinidad Sánchez. She was the aunt of Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, who was one of the founders of the Dominican Republic.

María Trinidad Sánchez played a big role in helping the Dominican soldiers. She supported them during the early days of their independence from Haiti. Sadly, she was killed on February 27, 1845. This happened by order of the first Dominican president, Pedro Santana.

A Look at the Province's History

The land that is now María Trinidad Sánchez province was once part of the Duarte province. Later, it became a municipality of the Samaná province.

In 1958, it officially became its own province. It was first named Julia Molina, after the mother of the dictator Rafael Trujillo. At that time, it included the municipalities of Julia Molina (now Nagua) and Cabrera. It also had a municipal district called Río San Juan, which later became a municipality.

After Trujillo's death in 1961, the province was renamed to its current name, María Trinidad Sánchez. The capital city was then named Nagua.

  • Several municipal districts were added over the years: San José de Matanzas (1996), Arroyo Salado (2000), La Entrada and El Pozo (2001), Las Gordas (2003), and Arroyo al Medio (2006).

The province's population makes up about 2.07% of the total population of the Dominican Republic. It is the 20th most populated province out of 31, plus the National District.

The largest city in the province is Nagua, which is also its capital. In 2014, Nagua had a population of 40,611 people.

Geography and Landscape

The María Trinidad Sánchez province covers a total area of about 1,206.5 km2 (465.8 sq mi). This means it takes up about 2.5% of the Dominican Republic's total area. It is the 20th largest province in the country.

The capital city, Nagua, is very close to sea level, with an altitude of only 4 m (13 ft).

The Cordillera Septentrional, or "Northern mountain range," runs through the southern part of the province. These mountains are not very tall. The mountain range ends in the southeastern part of the province, near a large swamp called Gran Estero. This swamp is close to the Samaná province.

Because the mountains are so close to the sea, the rivers in the province are usually short.
