Mara Dicle Neusel (born May 14, 1964 – died September 5, 2014) was a talented mathematician, writer, and teacher. She was also a strong supporter of women in mathematics. Her main area of study in math was called invariant theory. This field looks at how certain things stay the same, or "invariant," even when they are changed or moved around in different ways.

Early Life and Education

Mara Neusel was born in Stuttgart, Germany. She was one of two children. In 2001, she achieved a special advanced degree in mathematics called venia legendi (also known as Habilitation) from the University of Göttingen. She was only the fourth woman to earn this degree there. One of the famous mathematicians who earned it before her was Emmy Noether in 1919.

Mara Neusel's Career and Contributions

Professor Neusel wrote several important books about mathematics. These included a research book, a textbook for college students, and a memoir for the American Mathematical Society. Her textbook, Invariant Theory, was praised for being very clear and easy to understand.

Helping Girls and Women in Math

Mara Neusel was very passionate about encouraging girls and women to study mathematics. She started an event called Emmy Noether High School Mathematics Days in May 2003. This event still happens today, with workshops and math competitions for students. She also helped create the "Young Women in Mathematics" group at Texas Tech University. She even received a special grant to help support this group.

Teaching and Visiting Positions

Neusel started teaching at Texas Tech University in 2002 as an associate professor. She became a full professor in 2009. She also taught for a while at other well-known universities. These included Yale University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Notre Dame.

Involvement in Math Organizations

Professor Neusel was a long-time member of the American Mathematical Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics. She helped organize special math sessions at big conferences. For example, she helped with a session on "Homological Algebra and Its Applications" in 2005. She also co-organized a session on "Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry" in 2011. This session was part of the 40th-anniversary celebration for the Association for Women in Mathematics.
