Marak is a small, unincorporated community in Milam County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's known for its strong Czech heritage.
History of Marak
Marak was started in the early 1880s. It was named after František (Frank) Marak. He was a Moravian Czech immigrant. Frank moved to this area from Fayette County.
In 1889, the Kubecka family gave land for a Catholic church. The S. S. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church was officially opened in 1905. Marak is mainly a Czech community. The church is a very important part of the community.
The community is mostly made up of farms. These farms are spread out around the church and its cemeteries. Like many country areas in Texas, Marak's population went down. This happened as children of farmers moved to bigger towns.
However, in the 1970s, this trend changed. More people from towns started building homes in the countryside. By the early 1980s, the church had 100 families. In 2000, there was no population count available for Marak. A yearly homecoming event was still held at the church in 2009.
A fun Czech festival is held in Marak every year. It takes place on the last Sunday in August.
Where is Marak?
Marak is located on Farm to Market Road 2269. It is about 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Cameron. This area is in the northwestern part of Milam County.

A school was built in Marak in 1889. The Kubecka family also donated the land for this school. Today, students in Marak go to schools in the Cameron Independent School District.
