Marathon is easy to find because it sits right along U.S. Route 50, a major road. For many years, Marathon had its own post office with a special ZIP code. While that post office closed in 2011, the community still uses a nearby ZIP code.

Did you know Marathon wasn't always called Marathon? When this community was first planned out in 1838, it had a different name: Cynthiana. It wasn't until 1845 that a post office opened here, and it was given the name Marathon. This name stuck, and the community has been known as Marathon ever since.

For over 160 years, the Marathon post office was an important part of daily life. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. It was a place where neighbors might meet and chat. However, in 2011, the post office officially closed its doors. Even without its own post office, Marathon remains a unique part of Ohio's history.
