Marblehead is a small, unincorporated community located in Adams County, Illinois, United States. Being "unincorporated" means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's situated just south of the larger city of Quincy.
The main road that goes through Marblehead is Illinois State Route 57. This road can take you north directly into the main business area of Quincy. If you travel south on Route 57, it connects to Interstate 72, which is a major highway near Hannibal, Missouri.
Marblehead is also part of the Quincy, Illinois–Missouri Micropolitan Statistical Area. This term describes a region where a smaller city (like Quincy) and the communities around it are connected for things like jobs, shopping, and daily life.
Flooding in Marblehead
Marblehead is located in an area that can sometimes experience flooding. This is because it is close to the mighty Mississippi River. When the river levels rise very high, the surrounding low-lying areas, known as flood plains, can become covered with water.
The Flood of 2008
During the major Flood of 2008, Marblehead was significantly affected. Water from the Mississippi River spread across the land, causing parts of the community to flood.
A temporary "Lake Marblehead" was formed during this event. This name was used in a humorous way to describe the large amount of floodwater that covered the area, making it look like a new lake had appeared.
