Marc's Golf Journey
Early Life and Amateur Success
Marc Leishman was born in Warrnambool, a town in Victoria, Australia. He started playing golf at a young age. He was so good that he won the Warrnambool Club Championship when he was only 13 years old. He even played in the same group as his dad!
As a junior golfer, Marc won many important events. In 2001, he won the Victorian Junior Masters and the South Australian Junior Masters. He also became the Victorian Boys champion that year.
Turning Professional
Marc decided to become a professional golfer in 2005. This meant he would start playing golf for money. In 2006, he played on the Von Nida Tour. He won two tournaments and was the top player on that tour.
In 2007, Marc joined the Nationwide Tour (now called the Korn Ferry Tour). He won his first title on this tour in 2008 at the WNB Golf Classic. He won by a huge margin of eleven shots, which was a record! This great performance helped him earn a spot on the PGA Tour for the 2009 season.
PGA Tour Highlights
In 2009, Marc was named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. This award goes to the best new player on the tour. He finished in the top 10 three times that year. One of his best results was finishing second behind golf legend Tiger Woods at the BMW Championship.
Marc won his first PGA Tour event in June 2012. It was the Travelers Championship. He started the final day six shots behind the leaders. But he played an amazing round, shooting a 62 (eight birdies and no bogeys). He won by one shot, becoming the second Australian to win that event.
At the 2013 Masters Tournament, one of golf's biggest events, Marc started very strong. He was tied for the lead after the first round. He finished the tournament tied for fourth place, which was a fantastic result.
In July 2015, Marc had an incredible performance at The Open Championship (also known as the British Open). He shot a very low score in the third and final rounds. He ended up tied for first place with two other golfers, Zach Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen. They went into a playoff, which is like overtime in golf. Marc finished tied for second place, which was his best result ever in a major championship.
Marc continued his winning ways on the PGA Tour. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March 2017. Later that year, in September, he won the BMW Championship with a record-breaking score. In October 2018, he won the CIMB Classic by five shots.
In December 2019, Marc played for the International team in the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia. This is a team event where golfers from around the world play against a team from the United States. The U.S. team won, but Marc played well for his team.
In January 2020, Marc won his fifth PGA Tour title at the Farmers Insurance Open. He came from behind in the final round to win by one shot. In April 2021, he won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with his fellow Australian golfer, Cameron Smith. They won in a playoff! Marc also represented Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021.
In August 2022, Marc joined LIV Golf, a new professional golf tour.
Life Outside Golf
Marc is married to Audrey, and they have three children. They live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the United States.
In 2015, Audrey became very sick with a serious condition called acute respiratory distress syndrome. Marc left a big golf tournament to be with her. She was in a coma and had a very small chance of getting better. Luckily, she recovered and was able to go home.
After this experience, Marc and Audrey started a charity called the Begin Again Foundation. This foundation helps families who need help paying for medical costs.
