Marc David de Hond (born September 21, 1977 – died June 3, 2020) was a Dutch TV presenter, writer, and businessman. He was also a talented wheelchair basketball player. Marc worked as a disc jockey for radio stations like 3FM and Caz!.

He hosted TV shows such as Expedition Unlimited for LLiNK and De Rekenkamer for KRO. He also often commented on poker games shown on RTL 7. In 2008, Marc wrote a book called Kracht. It was about his recovery after a serious spinal cord injury in 2002. He also performed in solo theatre shows, including Scherven brengen geluk (2015) and Wie bang is, krijgt ook klappen (2016).

Marc's Career

Starting Internet Companies

Marc de Hond was born in Amsterdam. In 1996, at age 18, he stopped studying economics. He then started two internet companies: Hatchoo! and Veiling.com. Hatchoo! was a funny website that made fun of famous internet pages. Marc and his partner, Mark Götz, also wrote a monthly column for Net Magazine.

In 1999, Jurgens joined their company. In 2000, they sold their successful online auction site, Veiling.com, to a German company called Ricardo. Marc and his partners received shares in Ricardo. In his book, Marc said this sale made him one of the youngest "internet millionaires" in the Netherlands. This was because his shares became very valuable quickly.

Playing Wheelchair Basketball

In 2007, Marc started playing wheelchair basketball. From 2007 to 2016, he played for BV Lely, which is now called Apollo Amsterdam. This team played in the top Dutch league, Eredivisie. In 2010, he became an ambassador for the Disabled Sports Fund.

Later in 2010, Marc joined the Netherlands men's national wheelchair basketball team. He played his first international game against Germany. In 2011, Marc was part of the Dutch team at the European Championship. They finished eighth and did not qualify for the Paralympic Games. After three years of playing full-time, Marc left the national team in 2012. He wanted to spend more time on his other work. However, he kept playing in the Eredivisie for his club in Amsterdam and later for BV Hoofddorp.

Marc's Personal Life

Marc de Hond was the son of Maurice de Hond and Jasmin Busnach. In 2011, he started a relationship with athlete Remona Fransen. They got married in 2019. They had a son and a daughter together.

Around Christmas 2002, doctors found a tumor in Marc's spinal cord. He had three surgeries to remove it. During one surgery, nerves in his spinal cord were pinched. The medical team did not act fast enough when problems came up. This caused Marc to become partially paralyzed. In late 2018, Marc was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He passed away on June 3, 2020.
