Marcellus Douglass was born on October 5, 1830. His hometown was Thomaston, Georgia. After finishing school, he went to the University of Georgia. He studied hard and graduated from the university.

Becoming a Lawyer

After college, Marcellus Douglass became a lawyer. He practiced law in a town called Cuthbert, Georgia. This means he helped people with legal problems.

Military Career in the Civil War

The American Civil War began in 1861. Marcellus Douglass decided to join the army. He became an officer in the Confederate Army.

Joining the 13th Georgia Regiment

On June 19, 1861, Douglass was made a captain. He led Company E of the 13th Georgia Regiment. This was a group of soldiers.

Promotions and Leadership

Douglass quickly moved up in rank. On July 8, 1861, he became a Lieutenant Colonel. Then, on February 1, 1862, he was promoted to full Colonel. This meant he was in charge of many soldiers.

The Battle of Antietam

Colonel Douglass fought in many battles. One of the most famous was the Battle of Antietam. This battle happened on September 17, 1862. It was a very fierce fight.

Douglass's Final Battle

During the Battle of Antietam, Colonel Douglass was leading his soldiers. He was commanding a group called Lawton's brigade. They were fighting near a place known as the Cornfield. Sadly, Colonel Douglass was killed during this battle.

Marcellus Douglass was buried in Rosedale Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Cuthbert, Georgia. He is remembered for his service during the Civil War.
