Marcelo Déda Chagas (born March 11, 1960 – died December 2, 2013) was an important Brazilian politician. He served as the mayor of Aracaju, a major city, from 2000 to 2006. Later, he was elected as the Governor of Sergipe state in both 2006 and 2010.

Early Life and Political Start

Marcelo Déda was born in Simão Dias, a town in Sergipe. His journey into politics began when he was a student. He was active in the "Secondarist Movement," which was a student movement. He first got involved with student politics at the Federal University of Sergipe.

In 1982, when he was just 22 years old, Déda ran for state representative. This was during the first election for the Workers' Party. Even though he was young, he received nearly 300 votes. A few years later, in 1985, he ran for mayor of Aracaju. He came in second place, getting about 19,000 votes.

In 1986, Déda was elected as a state representative. He received the most votes of anyone in that election. His more than 30,000 votes were so many that they also helped another person from his party get elected.

He tried to be re-elected to the assembly in 1990 but was not successful. However, four years later, in 1994, he ran for the Federal Chamber. He was chosen as a federal representative, again receiving the most votes in the state. He represented Sergipe and even became a leader in the Workers' Party. In 1998, he was re-elected as a federal representative. But he later left that role to become the mayor of Aracaju.

Mayor of Aracaju

On May 26, 2000, Marcelo Déda became a candidate for mayor of Aracaju. At first, he was not expected to win. But during the three-month campaign, Déda became very popular. He won the election in the first round with 52.80% of the votes. His running mate was Edvaldo Nogueira, who became the vice-mayor.

In 2004, Déda was re-elected as mayor of Aracaju. He won by a large margin, getting 71.38% of the votes.

Governor of Sergipe

On March 31, 2006, Déda stepped down as mayor of Aracaju. He wanted to run for governor of Sergipe. He won this election in a historic victory, changing the political scene in Sergipe. Marcelo Déda was elected governor with 52.48% of the votes. Belivaldo Chagas became his vice-governor.

In 2010, Déda ran for re-election as governor. He won against João Alves Filho again in a close election. Marcelo Déda received 52% of the votes on October 3. Jackson Barreto became his vice-governor.

Impact and Achievements

Marcelo Déda's political journey was very impactful. His run for mayor of Aracaju in 1985 was a key moment. Even though he was young, he challenged strong politicians in Sergipe. Coming in second helped him get elected to the state legislature soon after.

As mayor of Aracaju, he worked to improve the city. He built and fixed many health centers. He also created two new hospitals. Many new roads were built, and a neighborhood called Santa Maria was developed. He also planned a new bridge, which connected several parts of Aracaju. He helped make the Cashew Forro, a June festival, one of the biggest in Brazil. During his time as mayor, Aracaju was known for having the best quality of life in the country. It even surpassed cities like Curitiba and Brasilia.

As Governor of Sergipe, he started important projects for the state. He oversaw the building of two new regional hospitals and about 12 other city hospitals. These helped reduce the pressure on the main emergency hospital. He also worked with the national government to set up a new health campus for the Federal University of Sergipe in Lagarto. This was important because the state only had one medical school before. The annual June festivals in Sergipe became a big tradition and are now among the largest in Brazil.

Marcelo Déda was a skilled political strategist. He supported the re-election of his successor as mayor of Aracaju, Edvaldo Nogueira. He also helped more than 60 mayors get elected across the state. This showed his strong influence in Sergipe politics.
