Early Career in South America
In 1998, Marcelo began his professional journey with Wanderers in Uruguay. He then moved to Defensor Sporting before playing for Coritiba in Brazil in 2000.
Playing in Europe and Asia
After his time in South America, Marcelo played for PAS Giannina in Greece. He also had a brief period with Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan in 2001. Later that year, he returned to Defensor Sporting in Uruguay.
