Marcelo Tinelli's Journey to Stardom

How His TV Career Began

Before becoming a TV star, Marcelo Tinelli worked at Radio Rivadavia. He was a sports announcer, reporting on football games. In 1983, another TV personality, Juan Alberto Badía, invited him to work on his TV show, Badía y Compañía.

In 1990, after several years as a sports commentator, Marcelo created his own TV show called Videomatch. This show was light-hearted and fun. It featured sports results, simple jokes, funny hidden camera pranks, and bloopers (funny mistakes).

From Videomatch to Showmatch

Later, Marcelo hosted a variety and music show called Ritmo de la Noche. This show featured live performances from famous international music groups like Bon Jovi and Duran Duran. Around 1996, the show changed. It started to include more musical acts and special guests. In 1999, Marcelo received a very important award, the Golden Martín Fierro Award, for Videomatch. This award is like the Emmys for Argentine television. The show is still on TV today, but it's now called Showmatch.

Marcelo also started his own TV production company called Ideas del Sur. This company has created many TV shows, including Okupas and Los Roldán. He also bought a radio station and a football club in Spain.

In 2002, he helped start a volleyball team called Club Ciudad de Bolívar. This team is from his hometown, San Carlos de Bolívar. The team quickly became one of the most successful in the Argentine volleyball league.

Videomatch and Showmatch Popularity

Marcelo became very popular as the host of Videomatch on the Argentine TV network Telefe. This show had funny skits, musical guests, and exciting contests. It was also the first show to introduce bloopers to Argentine audiences.

In 2005, Marcelo made a big change. He announced he was moving his show to Canal 9. This network was the third most-watched at the time. His show helped Canal 9 get much higher ratings, making it the most-watched show in the country.

In 2006, Marcelo announced another move, this time to El Trece. This was Telefe's biggest competitor. Marcelo has worked at El Trece ever since. His company, Ideas del Sur, also produces TV dramas for the network. The show's name changed from Videomatch to Showmatch because Telefe owned the original name.

Showmatch often includes segments with different contests, like dancing or singing. In 2009, it had a special segment called Gran Cuñado. This part of the show featured funny parodies of Argentine politicians. It caused a lot of discussion in the real political world!
