Patito Feo (which means Ugly Duckling in English) is a popular Argentine TV show. It's a telenovela, which is like a long soap opera. The show was made by Ideas del Sur and first aired on Canal 13 from 2007 to 2008.
After becoming a big hit in Argentina, Disney Channel bought the rights to show it. This helped Patito Feo become famous all over the world.
The story of Patito Feo takes place at the Pretty Land School of Arts. This is a fancy private music school near Buenos Aires. The main story is about two groups of teen girls. One group is called Las Populares, led by Patito Castro (Laura Esquivel). The other group is Las Divinas, led by Antonella Lamas Bernardi (Brenda Asnicar). They compete in a talent show to win a record deal.

Story of Patito Feo
Patricia, who everyone calls Patito, lives a simple life in Bariloche with her mom, Carmen. They have to move to the big city of Buenos Aires. They go because Patito needs special medical care. Carmen is surprised to find that the hospital doctor is Leandro. He is her old love and, secretly, Patito's father. Patito has always wanted to find her dad.
Patito loves music, so she joins the Pretty Land School of Arts. There, she meets Antonella, who is the most popular girl at the school. Antonella's mom, Blanca, is engaged to Leandro. She wants to marry him for money. Antonella doesn't know that her family is involved in tricky business. Her dad, who she thinks is dead, is actually in prison in Spain.
Patito and Antonella become friends, but also rivals. They are very different, but they both want to find their fathers. They also both dream of becoming music stars. At the Pretty Land School of Arts, two main groups are formed. Las Divinas are led by Antonella. Las Populares are led by Patito. These two groups compete in a talent show to win a record label contract.

Behind the Scenes

Filming for Patito Feo began in 2006 in Buenos Aires. The show first aired in April 2007 on Canal 13. By September of that year, it started airing across Latin America on Disney Channel. Soon, it became a huge hit with kids and teens everywhere.
Patito Feo was very successful not just on TV, but also with its merchandise. The show's music album was the best-selling album in Argentina in 2008. More than 100 different products were sold, like toys and clothes. An official magazine sold out its first print run in just one week. A sticker album also broke sales records for Panini in Argentina. The song Las Divinas became the best-selling ringtone ever in the country.
The live show tours were also very popular. In Argentina, over 400,000 tickets were sold for the first national tour. Over 150,000 tickets were sold in Buenos Aires alone. The cast then toured Latin America, selling over 700,000 tickets. They performed in countries like Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Peru.
In 2008, Patito Feo won a Martin Fierro Award. It was also nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Children & Young Adults program.
The show was loved by many, but it also received some criticism. Some people were concerned that the show made the "villains" seem cool. These were the mean, popular girls called Las Divinas. They were often unkind to Patito. Some groups worried that young girls liked the villains more than the main character.
Patito Feo also became popular in Europe. In early 2008, it started airing in France as De Tout Mon Coeur. It quickly became the most-watched show on the children's channel Gulli. Later, the show's rights were sold to Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
In Italy, the show was called Il Mondo di Patty. It became a huge success on Disney Channel. Because it was so popular, many products were released. Laura Esquivel even visited Italy to promote the show. Later, a TV channel called Italia 1 started airing it. Il Mondo di Patty became one of the most-watched shows there.
In Spain, Patito Feo debuted on Cartoon Network in 2008. It was very popular among young girls. In 2009, it moved to Disney Channel Spain. It became one of the highest-rated shows on cable, even beating Hannah Montana.
In Italy and Spain, over 200 different products were made, including toys, clothes, and even a video game for PlayStation. The show's music album sold millions of copies in both countries. It was also a big hit in Portugal, Greece, and Turkey. In Greece, the album sold extremely well.
Because of the show's success, Laura Esquivel started a successful acting career in Italy. She has starred in movies and TV shows there. Even though the original cast couldn't always tour, new musical shows with local actors were created. These shows sold many tickets in Italy and Spain.
