Marcus Antonius Corpuz Adoro (born December 31, 1971) is a Filipino musician. He is best known as the lead guitarist of the alternative rock band Eraserheads. Adoro has also released solo music under the name Markus Highway.

Marcus Adoro and the Eraserheads

During his time as the lead guitarist for the Eraserheads, Marcus Adoro did not write many songs. He usually wrote one song for each album. These songs were often like "fillers" for the album. Examples include "Punk Zappa" from the album Circus and "Southsuperhiway" from Natin99.

His biggest contribution to songwriting was in the album Carbon Stereoxide. For this album, he wrote three songs: "Pula," "Wala," and "Escalator Alligator."

Marcus Adoro's Guitar Style

Marcus Adoro's unique guitar style was a very important part of the Eraserheads' sound. It also helped define the sound of Pinoy alternative rock music. He used a "less is more" approach, which means he played simple but effective parts. This was different from many other guitarists at the time who played long, fancy solos.

Adoro preferred "pretty little ditties" (short, simple tunes) that fit the mood of the song. His style was similar to some guitarists from the 1980s punk scene in Manila. Later, he became interested in electric guitar noises and sounds from the environment. He started adding these sounds to his music as the band experimented more.

Music Projects After Eraserheads

After the Eraserheads, Marcus Adoro worked on several new music projects.

"Kamonkamon"

Marcus Adoro explained that "Kamonkamon" was meant to create excitement. Around 2002, a record company called BMG bought the entire project. It included a comic book, a soundtrack for the comic book, and a video documentary CD. However, the album was not released until 2005.

BMG wanted Adoro to make the comic book shorter. He felt this would ruin the whole idea of the project, which he described as "highly philosophical." So, he did not agree to their condition. He said that the eventual release of Kamonkamon would only be a small part of the whole idea.

Marcus Adoro was not the first member of Eraserheads to release solo music. In 2000, the band's lead singer, Ely Buendia, released his own album called Wanted: Bedspacer.

"Belma en Luis"

In 2002, Ely Buendia left the Eraserheads to start a new band called The Mongols. Marcus Adoro also decided to leave the band later that year. He moved to La Union and was not heard from for a while.

In April 2005, he sent an email about a new project called "Surfernando: The Adventures of Belma and Luis." This project was an EP (a short album). It was released with different covers and titles, such as Urfer Magazine and Duckdive.

Adoro explained that "Belma en Luis" was part of a "Pinoy surfing album." He wrote these songs in 2003 after three years of surfing. The songs from Surfernando were later included in his new band Markus Highway's first album, Behold, Rejoice! Surfernando Is Hear Nah.. The sound of Markus Highway can range from just Adoro and his guitar to a full band with many instruments.

Marcus Adoro's Band: Markus Highway

Marcus Adoro's current band is called "Markus Highway." This name is a play on words, similar to "Marcos Highway," a road in the Philippines. Adoro likes the name and wants to keep it for now. He enjoys playing with words and mentioned that he came up with most of the Eraserheads' album titles.

He has changed his stage name or band name many times since 2001. Some of his past band names include Surfernando, The Gumamela Band, Kamonkamon, The Flaming Katols, Markus Regime, The Mamones, and Talampunay Band. He finally settled on Markus Highway in 2007.

Reunions and Collaborations

Marcus Adoro, along with former Eraserheads bandmates Buddy Zabala and Raimund Marasigan, performed at an event called "Marooned." This event featured bands from the University of the Philippines. Ely Buendia was invited but could not attend. One of the songs they played together was "Batch 88" from the "Belma en Luis" project.

Adoro also made a surprise appearance at a concert for Ely Buendia on January 28, 2007. He borrowed a guitar and played a reggae version of the Eraserheads song "Huwag Mo Nang Itanong." He also played a song from his new album.

Markus Highway, Adoro's band, released their first album, "Behold, Rejoice! Surfernando Is Hear Nah.," in February 2008 under Warner Music Philippines.

Life Beyond Music

Marcus Adoro was interviewed by Jessica Soho on her TV show, "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho." The interview was about La Union, a place in the Philippines popular for beach surfing. Adoro now lives in La Union and enjoys his life as a local surfer.

He surfs for fun and does not join competitions. He says surfing is not his job; he just enjoys the lifestyle. Since 2002, he has been making documentaries about surfing.

He also directed a short film called "The Artist Is In." This film premiered alongside Ely Buendia's short film "Waiting Shed." Later, Adoro released "Violator Copy," a collection of his unreleased video works. It featured various local artists and surfers.

In 2012, he started a project called "Greems." This project is a collection of 100 musical pieces. All pieces are played with the same chord progression, in the same key, and each one is exactly 57 seconds long. He wrote and recorded all 100 pieces in just 21 days. The words for "Greems" were released as a book.
