Marcus Antonius Corpuz Adoro (born December 31, 1971) is a talented Filipino musician. He is best known as the lead guitarist for the famous Filipino alternative rock band, the Eraserheads, during the 1990s. He also uses the stage name Markus Highway. Marcus is also a member of the Pi Omicron fraternity at the University of the Philippines - Diliman.

Marcus Adoro's Musical Journey

His Time with Eraserheads

While he was the lead guitarist for the Eraserheads, Marcus Adoro contributed a few songs to their albums. He usually wrote one song per album. These songs were often like "fillers" for the album, such as "Punk Zappa" from the album Circus, and "Southsuperhiway" from Natin99. His biggest contributions to the band were in the album Carbon Stereoxide. For this album, he wrote the songs "Pula," "Wala," and "Escalator Alligator."

Marcus Adoro's Guitar Style

Marcus Adoro's unique guitar style was a very important part of the Eraserheads' sound. It also helped define the sound of Pinoy alternative rock music. He used a simple, "less is more" approach. This was different from many other local guitarists at the time who played more flashy and complex solos.

Instead of long, epic solos, Adoro preferred short, pretty tunes that fit the mood of the song. His style was similar to many guitarists from Manila's 1980s underground punk scene. Later, he became interested in electric guitar noises and sounds from the environment. He started adding these to his style as the band's music became more experimental.

Solo Projects After Eraserheads

After the Eraserheads, Marcus Adoro worked on several solo projects. One of his first projects was called "Kamonkamon." He explained that this was meant to create excitement. Around 2002, BMG records bought the entire work, which included a comic book, its soundtrack, and a video documentary. However, the album was not released until 2005.

BMG wanted the comic book to be shorter, but Adoro felt this would ruin the purpose of the project. He believed "Kamonkamon" was a very deep and thoughtful work, so he refused their condition. He said that when "Kamonkamon" is finally released, it will be just a small part of the bigger idea.

Another project was "Belma en Luis." In 2002, the Eraserheads' lead singer, Ely Buendia, left the band. Marcus Adoro also decided to leave later. He moved to La Union and was quiet for a while. In April 2005, he announced a new project called "Surfernando: The Adventures of Belma and Luis." This project included an EP (a short album).

Adoro explained that "Belma en Luis" was half of the songs for a "Pinoy surfing album." Surfernando is a character he created. He wrote these songs in 2003 after three years of surfing. He recorded and released his music on major labels. The Surfernando songs were later included in his new band Markus Highway's first album, Behold, Rejoice! Surfernando Is Hear Nah.. The sound of Markus Highway can range from just him and a guitar to a full band with many instruments.

Markus Highway and Other Bands

Marcus Adoro's current band name is "Markus Highway." This name is a play on words, like "Marcos Highway," a road in the Philippines. Adoro likes changing names because it's an old rock and roll tradition. He says that many of the Eraserheads' album titles also came from him.

Since 2001, Adoro has used different band names. These include Surfernando, The Gumamela Band, Kamonkamon, The Flaming Katols, Markus Regime, The Mamones, and Talampunay Band. He finally settled on Markus Highway in 2007.

Marcus Adoro, along with former Eraserheads bandmates Buddy Zabala and Raimund Marasigan, performed at an event called "Marooned." This event featured bands from the University of the Philippines. Ely Buendia was invited but could not attend. One of the songs they played was "Batch 88" from "Belma en Luis."

In an interview, Adoro shared his future plans. He wanted to get other musicians to help record the Surfernando album. He also planned to form a band for tours and work with other backup bands. He has been supported by artists like Mano-manu and Sunflower Day Camp. He also did a small bar tour with the bands Mayonnaise and Sunflower Day Camp.

Marcus Adoro made a surprise appearance at a concert for Ely Buendia on January 28, 2007. He was not on the list of performers. He walked on stage and played a reggae version of the Eraserheads song "Huwag Mo Nang Itanong." He also played a song from his new album.

Markus Highway, Marcus Adoro's new band under Warner Music Philippines, released their first album, "Behold, Rejoice! Surfernando Is Hear Nah.," in February 2008.

Life as a Surfer and Filmmaker

Marcus Adoro was interviewed by newscaster Jessica Soho on her show "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho." The interview was about La Union, which is now a popular place for beach surfers in the Philippines. Marcus Adoro is now based in La Union and enjoys his life as a local surfer.

He surfs for fun and does not join competitions. He says surfing is not his job; he just enjoys the lifestyle. Since 2002, he has been making documentaries about surfing.

He also directed a short film called "The Artist Is In." This film premiered alongside Ely Buendia's short film "Waiting Shed." Later, he released "Violator Copy," a collection of his unreleased video works. This collection featured various local artists and surfers, including Jericho Rosales, Dong Abay, and Pepe Smith.

In 2012, Marcus Adoro started a project called "Greems." This project is a collection of 100 musical pieces. All pieces are played with the same chord progression and in the same key. Each piece is exactly 57 seconds long. He wrote and recorded all 100 pieces in just 21 days. The words for "Greems" were planned to be released as a book.
