Marcus Beresford (born July 16, 1694, died April 4, 1763) was an important Irish politician and nobleman. He was known by different titles during his life. These included Sir Marcus Beresford and Viscount Tyrone. He later became the 1st Earl of Tyrone.
Early Life and Family
Marcus Beresford was the only son of Sir Tristram Beresford, 3rd Baronet. His mother was Nichola Sophia Hamilton.
When Marcus was just five years old, his father passed away in 1701. Marcus then inherited his father's title, becoming the 4th Baronet. Because he was so young, he had guardians to look after him. His first guardian was the 3rd Viscount Dungannon. After the Viscount died in 1706, his widow, Arabella, became Marcus's guardian. She was also Marcus's aunt.
Political Career
In 1715, Marcus Beresford began his career in politics. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Coleraine. He served in the Irish House of Commons, which was like one of the two main parts of the Irish Parliament at the time.
He continued to be an MP until 1720. That year, King George I of Great Britain gave him new titles. He became Baron Beresford and Viscount Tyrone. These titles meant he was now part of the Peerage of Ireland, a group of high-ranking nobles.
A year later, he moved from the House of Commons to the Irish House of Lords. This was the other main part of the Irish Parliament, usually for nobles. In 1736, he also became the Grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. This was a leadership role in a well-known organization. He held this position for two years.
Marcus Beresford received an even higher honor in 1746. He was given the title Earl of Tyrone. This was a very important noble title.
Family Life
On July 18, 1717, Marcus Beresford married Lady Catherine Power. She was the only daughter of James Power, who was the 3rd Earl of Tyrone and also the 8th Baron Power.
Marcus and Catherine had a large family together. They had seven sons and eight daughters, making a total of fifteen children. Some of their children included:
- George Beresford (1735–1800), who later became the 1st Marquess of Waterford.
- John Beresford (around 1737–1805), who also became an MP.
- William Beresford (1743–1819), who became the 1st Baron Decies.
- Lady Catherine Beresford (died 1763).
- Lady Anne Beresford (died 1770).
- Lady Jane Beresford (died 1792).
- Lady Araminta Beresford (died 1818).
- Lady Frances Maria Beresford (died 1815).
- Lady Eliza Beresford.
Marcus Beresford passed away at Tyrone House, Dublin in Dublin. His oldest son who was still alive, George, inherited his titles. Four years after Marcus's death, his wife, Catherine, claimed the title Baron La Poer, which was confirmed. She died in 1769.
