Marcus Windhager (born May 16, 2003) is a talented Australian rules footballer. He plays as a midfielder for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Marcus was chosen in the 2021 AFL Draft.
Marcus Windhager's Early Life
Marcus Windhager was a very good basketball player when he was younger. At 15, he played for Australia in 2018. This was at the FIBA Under-15 Oceania Basketball Championships. His team won a gold medal against New Zealand.
He was also a great junior footballer. In 2019, he won the Best & Fairest award in his league. He scored 23 goals in 10 games for Beaumaris. In one game, he even kicked 11 goals!
Marcus was part of St Kilda's Next Generation Academy. This program helps young Indigenous and multicultural footballers. It gives them a path to play professional football. He also received a special scholarship for Indigenous players.
In 2021, Marcus played for Vic Metro in a national carnival. He had a great game with 25 disposals. He also kicked a goal and had 12 disposals in another game. Experts thought he would be picked early in the 2021 draft. However, a back injury slowed him down. Marcus also played for the Sandringham Dragons.
Marcus Windhager's AFL Career
At the 2021 AFL draft, St Kilda picked Marcus Windhager. They used pick number 47 to get him. Marcus made his first AFL appearance in 2022. This was in Round 4 against Hawthorn.
In Round 8, he kicked his first ever AFL goal. This happened during a game against Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Later in 2022, Marcus became known as a "tagger." A tagger is a player who closely guards an opponent. Their job is to stop that opponent from getting the ball.
Marcus tagged important players like Tim Kelly and Cameron Guthrie. In Round 22, he received a Rising Star nomination. This award is for young players who show great talent. He earned it by limiting Brisbane star Lachie Neale to only 16 disposals. Marcus himself had 21 disposals in that game.
