Maren Ade (born December 12, 1976) is a German film director, screenwriter, and producer. She lives in Berlin and teaches screenwriting at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. Maren Ade also runs a film production company called Komplizen Film with Janine Jackowski and Jonas Dornbach. She is well-known for her movie Toni Erdmann, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Early Life and Education
Maren Ade was born in Karlsruhe, West Germany. When she was a teenager, she started making her first short films.
In 1998, she began studying film production and later film direction. She studied at the University of Television and Film (HFF) in Munich. She finished her studies in 2004.
Film Career
Starting Komplizen Film
In 2001, Maren Ade helped start the film production company Komplizen Film. She created it with Janine Jackowski, who also graduated from HFF. Through Komplizen Film, she produced her final student film, The Forest for the Trees, in 2003. This film won a special award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. The Forest for the Trees was shown at many film festivals around the world.
Everyone Else
In 2009, her second film, Everyone Else, was shown for the first time at the Berlin International Film Festival. It won two important awards there: the Silver Bear for Best Film and the Best Actress Silver Bear for Birgit Minichmayr. Everyone Else was released in movie theaters in more than 18 countries.
Toni Erdmann
In 2012, Maren Ade announced she would write and direct a film called Toni Erdmann. This movie is about a father who starts playing pranks on his grown-up daughter because he thinks she has become too serious. The film was first shown at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. It was the first German film to be shown there in 10 years. Toni Erdmann won the top award at the European Film Awards for Best European Film. This made Maren Ade the first woman to direct a movie that won this main award.
Personal Life
Maren Ade lives in Berlin with director Ulrich Köhler and their two children.
