Who Was Margaret of Anjou?
Margaret of Anjou was a powerful countess in the late 1200s. She held important titles in France. Her family was very well-known in Europe. She was connected to kings and queens through her parents and her marriage.
Her Family and Early Life
Margaret was born in 1272. Her father was King Charles II of Naples. Her mother was Mary of Hungary. Mary was the daughter of King Stephen V of Hungary. This means Margaret had royal blood from both sides of her family!
When Margaret got married, her father gave her husband, Charles of Valois, the areas of Anjou and Maine. This gift was part of her dowry. A dowry was money or property that a bride's family gave to her husband when they got married.
Marriage and Children
Margaret married Charles, Count of Valois in August 1290. The wedding took place in a town called Corbeil. Charles was a son of King Philip III of France, making him a very important person.
Margaret and Charles had several children together. Their children included:
- Isabelle (1292–1309), who married John III, Duke of Brittany.
- Philip VI of France (born around 1293, died 1350). He later became King of France.
- Joan of Valois.
- Margaret of Valois (1295–1342).
- Charles II, Count of Alençon (1297-1346).
Margaret of Anjou passed away on December 31, 1299. Her eldest son, Philip, took over her titles.
