Margaret Atwood Judson (born November 5, 1899 – died March 23, 1991) was an important American historian and writer. She spent most of her career teaching history at Rutgers University. She was known for her studies on British history.

Margaret Atwood Judson was born in Winsted, Connecticut, on November 5, 1899. She loved learning and went to college to study history.
Her Education Journey
Margaret first attended Mount Holyoke College, a well-known women's college. She graduated from there in 1922. After that, she continued her studies at Radcliffe College.
At Radcliffe, she earned two advanced degrees. She received her Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1923. Later, she completed her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in 1933. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in many subjects.
A Career in Teaching and History
In 1928, Margaret Judson began her teaching career at Douglass College, which was part of Rutgers University. She started as an instructor, teaching history to college students.
She quickly moved up in her career. In 1933, she became an assistant professor. Then, in 1942, she was promoted to associate professor. By 1948, she became a full professor, which is a very high rank for a university teacher.
From 1955 to 1963, Professor Judson was the chairwoman of the history department. This meant she was in charge of all the history teachers and courses. She retired from Rutgers University in 1966. However, she returned for a short time to be the acting dean of the college until 1967.
Rutgers University honored her by naming a special teaching position after her. It is called the Margaret Atwood Judson Professor of History.
Awards and Recognition
Margaret Judson was a founding member of the American Historical Association. This is a very important group for historians in the United States. She was a member for 61 years!
In December 1990, the American Historical Association gave her a special honor. She received an Award for Scholarly Distinction. This award recognized her excellent work and contributions to history.
In 1954, she also received a Guggenheim Fellowship. This is a prestigious award given to people who have shown outstanding ability in their fields. It helps them continue their important research and creative work.
Margaret Atwood Judson passed away on March 23, 1991, in Piscataway, New Jersey. She left behind a legacy of important historical research and dedicated teaching.
