Margaret Backhouse (born Margaret Holden) was a talented British painter in the 1800s. She was known for her portraits (pictures of people) and genre art (scenes from everyday life). Even though she was born near Birmingham, she lived most of her life in London. There, she often showed her paintings at famous art places like the Royal Academy.
About Margaret Backhouse
Margaret Backhouse was born in 1818 at Summerhill, near Birmingham. She grew up in a place called Woolstaston in Shropshire. Her father was Reverend H Augustus Holden. Her family also lived in Brighton for a while.
Her Art Training
Margaret went to school in Calais before taking art classes in Paris for a year. She learned from a painter named Grenier. She also studied with Jean-Baptiste Desire Troivaux, who was a watercolour artist.
When her family moved back to Britain, they lived in Cheltenham. Margaret then continued her art studies in London. She attended Sass's Academy, a well-known art school. Later, she took more lessons from famous artists like William Mulready. She also learned from an engraver named Edward Goodall.
Family Life and Travel
In April 1845, Margaret married Henry Fleetwood Backhouse, who was also an artist. She started a family but kept painting. In the 1860s and 1870s, she traveled to Switzerland and Italy. While there, she often sketched women busy with their work.
Showing Her Art
Margaret Backhouse showed her paintings at many important art exhibitions. She displayed her work at the Royal Academy between 1846 and 1882. She also had about 80 paintings in Society of Women Artists exhibitions. Margaret showed thirty works at the Royal Society of British Artists. Many of her paintings were made into chromolithographs. These were special prints made by a company called Rowney's.
By 1850, Margaret lived in Islington, London. She stayed there until about 1869. After that, she lived on Caledonian Road until at least 1885. Her daughter, Mary, also became an artist. Margaret Backhouse passed away in 1888.
