Margaret A Boozer, born in 1966, is an American artist. She is famous for her amazing sculptures and art made from clay. Her work often explores the unique qualities, history, and geology of the clay itself. She turns simple earth into incredible art!

Margaret Boozer's Education Journey

Margaret Boozer studied art at two great universities. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), from Auburn University in 1989. Later, in 1992, she received her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the New York State College of Ceramics. These studies helped her become the talented artist she is today.

Margaret Boozer's Career and Teaching

Margaret Boozer is the founder and director of the Red Dirt Studio. This is an art studio in Mount Rainier, Maryland. Here, she teaches advanced classes in ceramics and sculpture. She helps students become professional artists with their own studios.

Before starting Red Dirt Studio, she taught for ten years at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. She also visits and gives talks at places like the Freer Gallery of Art and the Renwick Gallery. She shares her knowledge with students at universities such as Auburn University and George Washington University.

Margaret Boozer's Art and Collections

Margaret Boozer's art is featured in many important collections. You can find her work at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Her art is also at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York. The US Department of State and the Washington DC City Hall Art Collection also own her pieces.

She also creates art for commercial galleries. These pieces are often decorative, abstract wall-mounted works. They look like cracked, heat-blasted rectangular slabs.

Dirt Drawings Installation

In 2009, Margaret Boozer's work Dirt Drawings was shown at the American University Museum. It was a huge floor installation made of crumbling clay. It looked like crater-like platters of ringed clay. Boozer wanted visitors to feel like they were in her studio. It might have been the biggest "mud pie" ever seen in a museum!

From This Distance Sculpture

In 2011, Boozer created From This Distance. This sculpture is made of clay and steel. It looks like a galaxy with clusters of speckled porcelain disks. This amazing piece was made for the Djibouti US Embassy. It is part of their permanent art collection.

Line Drawing and Soil Art

Also in 2011, her work Line Drawing was shown in Washington, DC. For this art, Boozer used soil and rock samples. She found these at a nearby construction site. She recreated the earth's layers in a long line on the gallery floor. This showed the geology of the city below.

The history and geology of the earth are often themes in Boozer's art. She uses raw soil and clay to tell an abstract story. Her 2012 work, Correlation Drawing / Drawing Correlations, also explores urban soil. It shows the beauty of dirt from New York City. This piece was made with Dr. Richard K. Shaw, a soil scientist. It was first shown at the Museum of Art and Design. Later, it was acquired by the Museum of the City of New York. It is now on permanent display at the South Street Seaport Museum. The art piece is a grid of clear boxes. Each box holds soil samples from all five New York boroughs. These samples were collected over 15 years.
