Margaret Clifford (born Margaret Russell) was an important English noblewoman who lived a long time ago. She was a special helper and companion to Queen Elizabeth I, known as a "maid of honor." Margaret was born in Exeter, England, in 1560. Her parents were Francis Russell, the Earl of Bedford, and Margaret St John.

Her Life and Family

Margaret married George Clifford, the Earl of Cumberland, in 1577. His father was Henry Clifford. Margaret's sister, Anne Russell, was also a very important person. Anne was married to Ambrose Dudley, whose brother was Robert Dudley, a close friend of Queen Elizabeth I. Both Margaret and her sister Anne were known for supporting writers and artists. Anne was also a close friend to Queen Elizabeth I and was with her when she passed away.

In 1603, Margaret traveled from London with her daughter, Lady Anne Clifford. They went to meet the new Queen, Anne of Denmark, and her son, Prince Henry. They visited places like Dingley and Coombe Abbey to see Princess Elizabeth. Margaret's husband, the Earl of Cumberland, also hosted the new King and Queen at his home, Grafton Regis. Even though Margaret was there, her daughter wrote that she was not treated as the main lady of the house.

Helping Others and Learning

Margaret Clifford was a kind person who liked to help her community. In 1593, she started Beamsley Hospital. This was a special home for local widows, which are women whose husbands have passed away. It was a way to provide them with a safe place to live.

She was also very interested in early forms of science and medicine. She studied "physic," which was the study of medicine, and "alchemy." Alchemy was an old practice that combined science, magic, and philosophy. People who studied alchemy tried to turn common metals into gold or find ways to live forever. Margaret even had a special book made with different alchemy recipes for her to use.

Her Legacy

Margaret Clifford passed away at Brougham Castle in 1616. Her tomb is in St Lawrence's Church, Appleby, next to her famous daughter, Lady Anne Clifford. Lady Anne Clifford later built a special monument called the Countess Pillar to remember her mother.

Her Children

Margaret and George Clifford had several children:

  • Francis Clifford (born 1584, died 1589)
  • Robert Clifford (born 1585, died 1591)
  • Lady Anne Clifford (born 1590, died 1676). She grew up to be a very important and strong-willed woman. Anne married Richard Sackville and later Philip Herbert.
