Margaret Fiennes, 11th Baroness Dacre (born 1541 – died 16 March 1612) was a special kind of noblewoman. She became a Baroness in her own right, which means she inherited the title herself, not through her husband. King James I of England made her the Baroness Dacre in 1604.
Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Fiennes, 9th Baron Dacre. Sadly, her father's title and lands were taken away by the King in the year she was born. Margaret was married to Sampson Lennard, who was a Member of Parliament. She was also known as Baroness Dacre of the South.
Her Family Background
Margaret was born in 1541. She was the youngest child and the only daughter of Thomas Fiennes, 9th Baron Dacre, and Mary Neville. In the year she was born, her father faced a difficult situation. Because of this, King Henry VIII ordered that his lands and noble title be taken away.
Marriage and Children
On 10 November 1564, when Margaret was 23, she married Sampson Lennard. He came from a well-known family of landowners. They lived at Chevening in Kent, England. Sampson Lennard was a Member of Parliament for different areas. He also held an important job as High Sheriff of Kent from 1590 to 1591.
Margaret and Sampson had many children, including four sons and six daughters. Here are some of them:
- Henry Lennard (born 1570), who later became the 12th Baron Dacre.
- Anne Lennard (born 1572), who married Herbert Morley.
- Gregory "George" Lennard (born 1573).
- Mary Lennard (born 1574), who married Sir Ralph Bosville.
- Margaret Lennard (born 1578), whose son, Sir William Waller, became a famous soldier.
- Frances Lennard (born 1583).
Becoming Baroness Dacre
The title of Baron Dacre had a bit of a complicated history. It was given back to Margaret's brother, Gregory, by Queen Elizabeth I. This happened shortly after she became queen.
However, when Gregory died in 1594, the title was once again without an owner. On 8 December 1604, King James I decided to make Margaret the Baroness Dacre in her own right. She held this important title until her death on 16 March 1612. After she passed away, her eldest son, Henry, became the next Baron Dacre.
