Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Margaret King was a talented artist who painted in London during the late 1700s. She was active as a painter between 1779 and 1787.

Margaret King: A Talented Artist

Margaret King was known for her beautiful pastel portraits. Pastels are like colored chalks that artists use to create soft, vibrant pictures. She showed her artwork at the famous Royal Academy in London. This was a very important place for artists to display their work.

Her Art and Exhibitions

Margaret King exhibited her pastel portraits every year from 1779 to 1787. She worked from different addresses in an area of London called Soho. Showing her paintings at the Royal Academy meant many people could see her talent.

What Critics Thought

People who wrote about art, called critics, often praised Margaret King's work. They thought she was very skilled. In 1784, one critic wrote that she was "first in merit" among artists who used crayons (another name for pastels). This shows how highly her art was valued.

Her Legacy and Surviving Works

After 1787, it's not clear what happened to Margaret King. Some people think she might be the same Margaret King who taught drawing in Bath, Somerset later on. This was between 1799 and 1819.

We know of sixteen paintings she showed at the Royal Academy. Today, only two of her pastel portraits are definitely known to still exist. One is of an unknown lady, and the other is a portrait of Sarah Tatum.
