Margaret Mahy Award facts for kids
The Margaret Mahy Award is a special prize given in New Zealand. It's officially called the Storylines Margaret Mahy Medal and Lecture Award. This award celebrates people who have done amazing things for children's books, publishing, or helping kids learn to read.
The award has been given out every year since 1991. It's presented by the Storylines Childrens Literature Charitable Trust of New Zealand. The award is named after Margaret Mahy, who was the very first person to receive it. She was a famous New Zealand children's author.
The Storylines Trust often calls the Saturday closest to International Children's Book Day "Margaret Mahy Day." (Unless it's during Easter!) On this day, they give out the Margaret Mahy Award and other prizes. The person who wins the Margaret Mahy Award also gives a speech. This speech is called the "Margaret Mahy Lecture." Later, this lecture is printed in the trust's yearly book, The Inside Story.
Who Has Won the Margaret Mahy Award?
The Margaret Mahy Award has been given to many talented people over the years. Each winner has made a big difference in the world of children's books. They often share their thoughts and ideas in a special lecture when they receive the award.
