School's Early Days
The main part of the school building first opened in 1912. It was originally called the O Street Vocational School. A famous architect named Snowden Ashford designed this part of the school. He was the Municipal Architect for Washington, D.C.
Renaming the School
In 1926, the school was renamed to honor Margaret Murray Washington. She was the wife of Booker T. Washington, a well-known educator. Margaret Murray Washington was a strong leader who worked for important social causes.
Building Changes Over Time
The school building grew bigger over the years. In 1928, Albert Harris designed an addition to the school. Later, in 1938, Albert Cassell designed another new section. A gymnasium was also added to the school in 1971.
What Students Learned
The school offered special training for students. Boys learned "manual training," which meant skills like woodworking or mechanics. Girls learned "domestic science and art," which included home economics and creative skills.
New Programs and Accreditation
During World War II, the school started a nursing program. This helped train people for important jobs during the war. After the war, the nursing program became officially recognized, or "accredited." The school taught both high school students and younger students from nearby elementary schools.
Later Years and New Purpose
In 2008, the Margaret Murray Washington School was one of many schools that closed. This happened because of budget cuts in the city. However, the building found a new purpose. In 2012, work began to change the old school into apartments for senior citizens. This new housing, called the House of Lebanon, opened in 2013. It has 82 apartments.
