Margaret Dawn Paice (born 1 September 1920) is an Australian writer for children. She is also a talented artist who illustrates books and creates art for businesses.

Her Early Life

Margaret Dawn Cantle was born in Brisbane, Australia, on 1 September 1920. Her parents were Violet and Sydney Cantle. Margaret grew up in the countryside of Queensland. She went to local schools and also learned through lessons sent by mail. Later, she attended Moreton Bay High School.

Becoming a Writer and Artist

In 1937, some of Margaret's poems were printed in a newspaper called The Central Queensland Herald. In 1942, she married Hubert Whitfield Paice. Sadly, he passed away in 1955. After this, Margaret moved to Sydney. There, she studied art at the National Art School and the Royal Art Society. She then started working as an artist for businesses.

Margaret wrote and illustrated her very first book, Mirram, in 1955. This book was praised in a special competition for children's picture books that year. She created drawings for her own books and for other books published by Angus & Robertson. This included three books written by Ann E. Wells.

Her Books and TV Show

One of Margaret Paice's novels, also called Colour in the Creek, was turned into a ten-episode TV series. Another of her books, Shadow of Wings, also inspired the show. The TV series was shown on TCN 9.

Later Life

In 1960, Margaret married Wilfred Harriss, who passed away in 1975. Since 1969, she has lived in the beautiful Blue Mountains.

In 1978, Margaret was interviewed by Hazel de Berg. This interview is part of a special collection of spoken stories at the National Library of Australia. Her personal papers, including letters and original drawings, are kept safe at the State Library of New South Wales.

Her Books

Margaret Paice has written and illustrated many books for children. She has also illustrated books for other authors. Some of her well-known works include the "Colour in the Creek" trilogy.
