Margaret Yorke, whose real name was Margaret Beda Nicholson, was a famous English writer. She was born on January 30, 1924, and passed away on November 17, 2012. Margaret Yorke was best known for writing exciting crime fiction stories.

About Margaret Yorke

Margaret Larminie was born in Compton, Surrey, England, in 1924. She spent her early years growing up in Dublin, Ireland. In 1937, her family moved back to England.

During World War II, Margaret helped out in hospitals. She worked as a librarian, making sure patients had books to read. When she was eighteen, she joined the WRNS. This was a special group for women in the navy. She worked as a driver during the war.

Becoming a Writer

Margaret decided to use the pen name "Yorke." This was to avoid confusion with another writer in her family. Her first novel, Summer Flight, came out in 1957.

She created a detective character named Patrick Grant. He was an Oxford professor who loved Shakespeare. Patrick Grant appeared in five of her books. These books were later re-released as digital books in 2018.

Margaret Yorke wrote many books throughout her career. Her last novels were A Case to Answer (2000) and Cause for Concern (2001). She was also the chairman of the Crime Writers Association from 1979 to 1980. This is a group for crime writers.

Margaret lived in Long Crendon in Buckinghamshire. She passed away there in 2012 when she was 88 years old. She had a son and a daughter.

Awards and Recognition

Margaret Yorke received important awards for her writing. In 1999, she won the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger. This award celebrates a writer's entire career in crime fiction.

She also won the Martin Beck Award in 1982. This award came from the Swedish Academy of Detection. She won it for her book The Scent of Fear.
