Her Life and Career

Margarita Brender Rubira was born in 1919 in Romania. She studied architecture in her home country. In 1962, she moved to Spain. The Barcelona School of Architecture officially recognized her architecture degree. This made her the very first woman architect in Catalonia.

That same year, she became the only woman member of the Architects' Association of Catalonia. This group is called the COAC for short. For many years, she was the only woman architect working in the Province of Barcelona.

Her Ideas on Architecture

In 1962, Margarita gave an interview to a newspaper called La Prensa. She said that architects have a big responsibility. Their buildings greatly affect people's lives. She believed architects should design homes that are true shelters. These homes should be places of rest. They should also help people stay healthy and happy.

Important Projects

Starting in 1966, Brender worked on a big project. She was part of a team of three architects. They designed a modern apartment complex with 346 homes. This complex was built in the Can Mercader area of Badalona. It replaced an old fabric factory.

Later, experts described Can Mercader as a great example of functional architecture. They noted how green spaces were mixed with the concrete buildings.

Her own designs were featured in an architecture magazine called Cuaderns. This happened in 1969 and 1970.

Designs for Apartments

The 1969 magazine issue showed her design for an apartment building. This building was located on the Costa Brava. The Architects' Association of Catalonia (COAC) praised her design. They said her hand-drawn plans showed a clever use of building blocks. This made the whole complex look natural and connected. It was similar to the style used in the Can Mercader project.

The 1970 magazine issue featured another of her designs. This time, it was for luxury apartments. These apartments were built in Prat de Llobregat.

Connecting Buildings with Nature

In 2017, an article was written about Margarita Brender Rubira. It was published by the Republican Youth of Catalonia (JERC). The article explained her unique style. She believed in an advanced style of architecture. She thought that how spaces were designed could make people's lives better.

Throughout her career, she always focused on mixing architecture with nature. She felt that every room should have a view of the sky. She often wished that city rules allowed for bigger spaces. She believed these larger spaces were fair, timely, and necessary for people.
