Margarita Rivière Martí (born August 17, 1944 – died March 29, 2015) was a Spanish journalist and writer. She wrote thousands of newspaper articles, interviews, and 30 books. She was known for her modern and feminist ideas during Spain's change to democracy. Margarita was one of the first women to work as a journalist in Spain. She and Teresa Rubio were the first two female journalists for the Diario de Barcelona. In 1978, she also helped start El Periódico de Catalunya.

Margarita Rivière's Life Story

Margarita Rivière studied journalism in Barcelona. She also studied philosophy at the Universidad de la Ciudad Condal. Later, she studied design in Paris, France.

Early Journalism Career

Margarita's first jobs in journalism were in the fashion world. From 1965 to 1968, she worked for the French magazine Marie Claire. She was their reporter in Spain. After that, she worked for a business magazine called Dossier Mundo. She was the main editor there from 1971 to 1974.

In 1978, she became the head of the Culture section for Diario de Barcelona. Then, in 1984, she led the same section for El Periódico de Catalunya. She also managed the Sunday newspaper and wrote daily opinion articles. From 1988 to 1992, she was the director of the news agency EFE in Catalonia.

Margarita often shared stories about how hard it was for women journalists. She remembered that there were no women's bathrooms in newspaper offices. She had to walk far to find one. This shows how few women worked in journalism back then.

Famous Interviews and Other Work

Throughout her career, Margarita focused on interviews and articles. She interviewed many important people, especially in Catalonia. Some of her famous interviews included King Juan Carlos I, Yoko Ono, and the Dalai Lama. She also interviewed artists like Pedro Almodóvar and singers like Julio Iglesias.

Her articles were printed in major newspapers like El País, El Periódico, and La Vanguardia. From 1981 to 1984, she had a daily interview section in El Periódico.

Margarita also created a magazine called Qué leer. She directed television shows and wrote speeches and scripts. She even wrote for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Her last book was Clave K. It was a funny story about power in Catalonia. She had written it 15 years before it was published. Because she was ill, she could not attend the book's launch. Instead, she sent a video message.

Margarita Rivière passed away on March 29, 2015. She was 70 years old and died from a lung disease.
