Margo Lanagan is an amazing Australian writer. She was born in 1960 in Waratah, New South Wales. Margo is famous for her short stories and books for young people. These books are often called young adult fiction.

About Margo Lanagan

Margo grew up in Raymond Terrace, Australia. Around 1971 or 1972, she moved to Melbourne. Later, after traveling to different countries, she settled in Sydney in 1982.

Her Books and Awards

Many of Margo's books, especially her young adult (YA) novels, were first released in Australia. However, several of her stories have become popular all over the world!

Her collection of short stories, called Black Juice, won some really big awards. It received two World Fantasy Awards. It also won a special mention, called a 2006 Printz Honor Award. This award is for the best young adult literature.

Black Juice was first published in Australia. Then, it was released in the United Kingdom in 2004. In 2005, it came out in North America. One famous story from this collection is "Singing My Sister Down". This story was even nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Awards! These are very important awards for science fiction and fantasy stories.

Another collection of her short stories is White Time. This book was first published in Australia in 2000. After Black Juice became so popular, White Time was also released in North America in 2006. The American Library Association recognized White Time as a "Best Book for Young Adults" in 2007.

Margo's novel, Tender Morsels, also won a Printz Honor Award in 2009. This was her second Printz Honor Award! Tender Morsels was also a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award in 2008. In 2009, it won a World Fantasy Award for best novel. It was also nominated for the Locus Award for Best Young Adult Book.

Her novella (which is a story shorter than a novel but longer than a short story) called Sea-Hearts was a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award in 2009. This story was later made into a full novel. In 2010, Sea-Hearts won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novella.

Margo also attended a special writing program called the Clarion West Writers Workshop in 1999. She even returned to teach at this workshop in 2011 and 2013.
