Maria Àngels Cardona i Florit (born in Ferreries in 1940 – died in Barcelona in 1991) was an important scientist from Menorca. She was a biologist, an ecologist, and a botanist. She spent most of her working life in Barcelona.

Her Life Story

Maria Àngels Cardona i Florit spent her early childhood in Ciutadella, a town on the island of Menorca. Later, she moved to Barcelona to attend university.

Becoming a Scientist

In 1963, she finished her degree in Biological Science at the University of Barcelona. After that, from 1964 to 1971, she worked on her Doctoral thesis. This big research project was about the life cycle of plants. She studied how plants grow and change in different natural areas, especially around the Collserola area near Barcelona.

Her thesis was very important. It started a new way of studying plants and their environments in Catalonia. This new approach changed how scientists did their research. In 1972, she won a special award called the Pius Font i Quer Prize from the Institut d'Estudis Catalans.

Teaching and Research

Even while she was working on her doctorate, Maria Àngels Cardona i Florit taught at the University of Barcelona. From 1975 to 1985, she was a professor in the Botany Department. Later, she moved to the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

In 1986, she became a full professor of Plant Biology. She held this important position until she passed away.

Working with Others

Maria Àngels Cardona i Florit worked with many scientists from other countries. One of her key collaborators was Juliette Contandriopoulos. Juliette was a professor from the University of Marseille and an expert in Cytogenetics, which is the study of cells and genes.

Maria Àngels wrote more than fifty scientific papers. She also helped create the Menorca Encyclopedia, which is a collection of knowledge about her home island. She was a member of many important science groups both in Spain and around the world.

Sadly, Maria Àngels Cardona i Florit had poor health. She died in Barcelona on December 24, 1991.
