Maria Beneyto Cuñat (born May 14, 1925 – died March 15, 2011) was a famous Spanish poet. She wrote many beautiful poems and stories. Maria was honored with the important Premio de las Letras Valencianas award for her writing.

About Maria Beneyto

Maria Beneyto was born in Valencia, Spain. When she was three years old, her family moved to Madrid. She lived there until 1937. Maria learned to read and write in Castilian (Spanish) while in Madrid.

After the Spanish Civil War, Maria returned to Valencia. Here, she discovered that the Valencian language was very important. This was a new experience for her. During these years, she became very dedicated to writing. She taught herself a lot, like many writers of her time.

Maria also started to connect with other writers in Valencia. Because she learned Castilian in Madrid and grew up with Valencian, she could write in both languages. This is called being bilingual. Maria Beneyto passed away on March 15, 2011.

Maria Beneyto's Books and Poems

Maria Beneyto started writing in Castilian Spanish. Her first books were Canción olvidada (1947) and Eva en el tiempo (1952). In the 1950s, she also published her first two poems in Valencian. These were called Otra voz (1952) and Rayas al aire (1956).

In 1958, she wrote her first novel, La prometida, which was in Castilian. She did not publish in Valencian again until the 1960s. Then, she wrote the novels La gente que vive al mundo (1966) and La mujer fuerte (1967). In 1977, she released a poetry book called Vidrio herido de sangre. After this, she stopped publishing for a long time, until the 1990s.

In 1993, Maria published several new works. These included her Antología poética (a collection of her best poems) and new collections like Tras sepulta la ternura. She also released three Castilian collections: Archipiélago, Nocturnidad y alevosía, and Hojas para algún día de noviembre.

More books followed, like Para desconocer la primavera in 1994. The year 1997 was very busy for her. She reissued La gente que vive al mundo and published a new collection called Elegías de la piedra quebradiza. Her very last collection of poems, Bressoleig insomnia anger, came out in 2003.

Maria Beneyto's poems were included in many other poetry collections. This shows how important her work was. She is seen as one of the main writers of the Valencian poetry group from the 1950s. Other important writers from this group include Vicent Andrés Estellés and Joan Fuster.
