Maria Isabel Barreno de Faria Martins was a Portuguese writer, essayist, and journalist. She was born on July 10, 1939, and passed away on September 3, 2016. She is best known for being one of the three authors of the book Novas Cartas Portuguesas.

This book was written with Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa. These three writers were often called the "Three Marias." They faced legal trouble because of their book in 1972. This happened during a time when Portugal was under a strict government called the Estado Novo dictatorship. The book and their trial became very famous. They even inspired protests in Portugal and got attention from women's rights groups around the world.

Maria Isabel Barreno was born in Lisbon, Portugal. She spent her childhood and teenage years in the Areeiro area of the city. She went to the Universidade de Lisboa. There, she studied History and Philosophy.

After finishing her studies, she worked at the Institute for Industrial Research. She was very dedicated to the cause of feminism. This means she worked to support equal rights for women. She was an important part of the Portuguese feminist movement. She worked closely with Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa. Together, they were known as the "Three Marias" (Três Marias).

On March 8, 2004, Maria Isabel Barreno received a special award. She was made a Grand Official in the Order of Prince Henry. This is a high honor in Portugal. She passed away in 2016 at the age of 77.
