Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina (born June 29, 1725 – died December 29, 1790) was an important ruler in Italy. She was the Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara. She ruled these areas from 1731 until she passed away in 1790.
Maria Teresa was the oldest child of Alderano I, who was the Duke of Massa and Carrara. Her mother was Ricciarda Gonzaga. Maria Teresa later became the wife of Ercole III d'Este, Duke of Modena.

Life of Maria Teresa
Early Life and Becoming a Duchess
Maria Teresa was born in a town called Novellara, which is in modern-day Italy. Since she was the oldest child, she was set to inherit her father's titles and lands.
Her father died on August 18, 1731. At that time, Maria Teresa was only six years old. This meant she became the Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara at a very young age.
Her Marriages and Family
When Maria Teresa was a teenager, she was married twice. Her first marriage happened on November 10, 1734. She married Eugenio Giovanni Francesco of Savoy through a special ceremony called a proxy marriage. This means someone else stood in for him during the ceremony.
However, Eugenio died just thirteen days later. Because they never actually met, their marriage was officially cancelled.
In 1741, Maria Teresa married Ercole Rinaldo d'Este. He was the future ruler of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio. After their marriage, the Duchy of Massa and the Principality of Carrara became part of the larger Duchy of Modena and Reggio.
A Royal Marriage for Her Daughter
Maria Teresa and Ercole III had two children together. Only one of them lived to adulthood:
- Maria Beatrice d'Este, Duchess of Massa (born April 7, 1750 – died November 14, 1829)
- Rinaldo Francesco d'Este (born January 4, 1753 - died May 5, 1753)
The Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa helped arrange a very important marriage for Maria Teresa's daughter, Maria Beatrice. In 1771, Maria Beatrice married Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. He was the empress's fourth son.
This marriage created a new royal family line called the House of Austria-Este. This family was a branch of the powerful House of Habsburg-Lorraine. They went on to rule Modena between 1814 and 1859.
Maria Teresa passed away in 1790 in Modena. Her other titles, like Duchess of Ajello and Baroness of Paduli, also went to her daughter.
