Maria de Medeiros (born August 19, 1965) is a famous Portuguese actress, movie director, and singer. She is known for her work in both European and American movies. She has a talent for acting, directing films, and singing for audiences around the world.

Early Life and Education

Maria de Medeiros was born in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Her father is the well-known musician and composer António Victorino de Almeida. Growing up in a creative family helped shape her future career.

She started acting at a young age, getting her first role in a movie when she was only 15. When she turned 18, she moved to France to study acting. She attended a famous drama school called the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique (CNSAD) and graduated in 1988.

Medeiros holds a special title as a UNESCO Artist for Peace. She is the first woman from Portugal to receive this honor, which recognizes people who use their influence to promote peace and understanding.

Career in Film and Music

Maria de Medeiros has had a successful career in both movies and music. She is known for playing a wide variety of characters and for her unique artistic style.

Acting and Directing in Movies

One of her first major roles was playing the author Anaïs Nin in the movie Henry & June (1990). In 1994, she became known to a wider audience for her role in Quentin Tarantino's hit movie Pulp Fiction. In the film, she played Fabienne, the girlfriend of the character played by Bruce Willis.

In 2000, Medeiros directed the movie April Captains. This film tells the story of the Carnation Revolution, an important event in Portugal's history that happened in 1974. The movie was shown at the famous 2000 Cannes Film Festival.

She has also appeared in many other films, including the Canadian movie The Saddest Music in the World (2004), where she acted alongside Isabella Rossellini.

Besides acting and directing, Maria de Medeiros is also a talented singer. In 2007, she released an album called A little more Blue. On this album, she sang songs by famous Brazilian musicians like Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso.

She has released several other albums, including Penínsulas & Continentes in 2010 and Pájaros Eternos in 2012. She often collaborates with other artists. For example, she sang the song "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" on an album by the musician The Legendary Tigerman.
