Mariam Chabi Talata Zimé Yérima, born on July 7, 1963, is an important politician from Benin. She is currently the Vice President of Benin. She was chosen for this role in the 2021 Beninese presidential election, running alongside President Patrice Talon. She officially started her job on May 23, 2021.

Mariam Talata made history as Benin's first female Vice President. Before this, she was a teacher and a school inspector. She is one of many women in sub-Saharan Africa who are now holding important leadership positions.

Her Education and Learning

Mariam Talata finished her high school studies in Cotonou in 1985. She then went to the University of Benin, where she studied philosophy. After getting her first degree, she went to a special school in Porto-Novo to become a philosophy teacher. She earned a teaching qualification called CAPES.

In 2006, she passed an exam to become a general inspector for secondary schools. This meant she would help make sure schools were teaching well. She also used to be a presenter at a local radio station in Parakou. This experience helped her when she spoke at meetings during the 2021 presidential election campaign.

Her Working Life

Mariam Chabi Talata taught in several schools in northern Benin. She also taught at a higher education school in Porto-Novo. Her teaching career ended when she became a general inspector for secondary schools.

She also held important jobs in government. In 2003, she became a Censor at a school, which is a role similar to a school administrator. From 2013 to 2016, she was a deputy inspector for schools in the Borgou and Alibori areas. From 2016 to 2019, she was the Director of General Secondary Education for the Ministry of Education.

Her Political Career

Mariam Chabi Talata started her political journey in 2001 when she joined a political party called UDS. She was elected as a city councilor in Parakou and served from 2008 to 2015. During this time, she also led the Women's Union of Elected City Councilors for several departments.

In 2016, she supported Patrice Talon when he ran for president, and he won. Later, she helped create a new political party called the Progressive Union. In 2019, she was elected as a member of the National Assembly, which is like the country's parliament. She became the first woman to be the 1st Vice-President of the National Assembly of Benin.

In 2021, she ran as Vice President with Patrice Talon for the presidential election. They won, and this marked President Talon's second term in office.
