History of Marianna
Marianna was created in 1907 as a special town for workers of the Pittsburgh Buffalo Company's coal mine. It officially became a borough in 1910. The Marianna Mine was considered one of the most modern and best-equipped mines in the world when it was built. The homes in the town were made of brick and had nice features like indoor bathrooms and fenced yards, which was very good for that time.
The Mine Explosion
Sadly, on November 28, 1908, a big explosion happened in the mine. This tragic event killed 154 men. Only one person survived. Even though the mine was quickly fixed by the Pittsburgh Buffalo Company, it faced difficulties.
Mine Ownership and Closure
By 1914, the mine was sold to the Union Coal and Coke Company. Later, it was sold again to Bethlehem Steel, which continued to dig for coal until 1988. The mine closed after its main conveyor belt caught fire.
