A Young Musical Star
Marianna Auenbrugger was born in Vienna, Austria. Her father was Leopold Auenbrugger, a well-known doctor. Marianna quickly became famous in Vienna for her amazing musical skills. She was a highly respected pianist and also wrote her own music.
Marianna and her sister, Caterina Franziska, were lucky to study with two very famous composers. Their teachers were Joseph Haydn and Antonio Salieri. Haydn and Salieri were important figures in classical music.
Haydn's Special Gift
In 1780, Joseph Haydn showed how much he admired Marianna and her sister. He dedicated a group of six piano sonatas to them. A sonata is a piece of music usually for one or two instruments. This was a big honor for the sisters. It showed that Haydn believed they were very talented musicians.
Salieri's Tribute
Marianna Auenbrugger passed away in 1782 at a young age. After her death, her teacher Antonio Salieri wanted to honor her memory. He paid to have one of her own compositions published. This was her Keyboard Sonata in E-flat. Salieri published it along with his own funeral song, called De si piacevoli. This act showed how much her teachers and fellow musicians respected her talent.
