Marià Fortuny (born June 11, 1838 – died November 21, 1874) was a famous Spanish painter. Even though he lived a short life, he created many beautiful artworks. He was known for his interest in painting scenes from the Middle East and North Africa. He also developed a unique painting style with loose brushstrokes and bright colors.

Early Life and Talent

Marià Fortuny was born in Reus, a town near Taragon in Catalonia, Spain. His father passed away when Marià was very young. Sadly, his mother also died when he was just 12 years old.

Marià was then raised by his grandfather, who was a cabinetmaker. His grandfather taught him how to make small wax figures. When Marià was 9, he entered a local art competition. A kind person named Domingo Soberano saw his talent and encouraged him to study art more.

Becoming an Artist

At 14, Marià moved to Barcelona with his grandfather. A sculptor named Domingo Talarn helped him get money to attend the Academy of Barcelona. He studied there for four years.

In March 1857, Marià won a special scholarship. This allowed him to study art for two years in Rome, starting in 1858. In Rome, he learned about drawing and grand painting styles.

Painting the War

In 1859, the Spanish government asked Marià to join them. They wanted him to paint scenes from the Spanish-Moroccan War. He spent about six months with the expedition. He returned to Spain in the summer of 1860. His experiences there greatly influenced his art.
