Estatua de la Mariblanca - 02
This statue is a copy of the original Mariblanca, which once stood in Madrid's Puerta del Sol.

The Mariblanca statues are famous female figures. Their exact origin is a bit of a mystery! Some people think they might be linked to ancient goddesses like Venus or Fortuna, who were symbols of fertility (meaning the ability to grow things or have children).

The name "Mariblanca" is common in Spanish. It comes from a specific statue bought in 1625. A merchant from Florence, Italy, named Ludovico Turchi, bought it as a gift. He wanted it to sit on top of a beautiful fountain in Madrid called the "Fountain of Faith." This fountain is now gone, but the Mariblanca statue is the only part of it that still exists! It used to be in a very important spot in Madrid, called the Puerta del Sol.

Today, you can find many copies and similar statues that are also called Mariblanca. We don't know for sure why so many copies were made. It might have been because people were worried about worshipping statues that looked like pagan gods, instead of figures like the Virgin Mary. However, these statues often represent ideas like purity, fertility, and grace. Interestingly, Mariblanca is also sometimes used as a female Christian name.

The Original Mariblanca Statue

The very first Mariblanca statue was a special gift. It was meant to be the crowning piece of the "Fountain of Faith" in Madrid. This fountain was a big, important landmark in the city. The statue itself was made of white marble, which is probably how it got its name, "Mariblanca," meaning "White Mary" or "White Sea" (though "white" is the key part).

Where the Fountain Stood

The Fountain of Faith, with its Mariblanca statue, was located in the Puerta del Sol. This is a very famous and busy square in the heart of Madrid. Over time, the city changed, and the original fountain was removed. Luckily, the Mariblanca statue was saved! It's now the only piece left of that grand old fountain.

Copies and Other Mariblancas

Because the original Mariblanca was so well-known, many other statues were made that looked similar or were also called Mariblanca. These copies helped keep the image and idea of the Mariblanca alive, even after the original fountain was gone.

Why So Many Copies?

Historians believe there might be a few reasons for the many Mariblanca copies. One idea is that people wanted to show off beautiful art. Another thought is that these statues, with their connections to goddesses of fertility and grace, were very popular. They represented important ideas about life and beauty.

Mariblanca as a Name

Beyond the statues, "Mariblanca" is also used as a name for girls. This shows how much the image of the Mariblanca statue has become a part of Spanish culture and history. It's a unique name with a long and interesting story behind it.
