Marie of Lusignan was an important noblewoman in France during the 13th century. She was also known as Marie I de Lusignan. Born around 1223 in Melle, she passed away in Poitou on October 1, 1260. Her burial place is the Abbey of Foucarmont.
Marie was the only child of Raoul II of Lusignan and his second wife, Yolande de Dreux. When her father died in 1246, Marie inherited several important titles. She became the Lady of Issoudun (Dame d'Issoudun) and the Countess of Eu and Guines. These titles meant she was a powerful landowner and ruler in her own right.
Marie's Marriage and Family
Around the year 1249, Marie of Lusignan married Alphonso of Brienne. Alphonso became the Count of Eu because of his marriage to Marie. This is known as being a "Count by marriage."
Marie and Alphonso had at least two children together:
- John I of Brienne, Count of Eu
- Blanche, who became the Abbess of Maubuisson
