Discovering Marie-Louise's Early Life
Marie-Louise Fébronie Chassé was born on August 29, 1880. Her hometown was Kamouraska, Quebec, in Canada. Her parents were Pierre Charles Pitre Chassé and Marie-Catherine Fébronie Lévesque.
When she was 20 years old, in 1900, she married her first husband, Étienne Leclerc. Étienne worked as a fisherman. Sadly, he passed away in 1911 at age 39 from a lung illness. Marie-Louise and Étienne had six children together. Four of their children lived to be adults.
A very difficult time followed for Marie-Louise. In the next year, both of her parents also passed away. Her father died in June 1911, and her mother in February 1912.
Moving to Ontario for Family
In 1913, Marie-Louise made a big decision. She placed two of her four children with other family members or friends. She then moved to the border of Ontario province. She went there to help her sister, whose children were very sick with a serious illness.
While in Ontario, she met her second husband, Hector Meilleur. They got married on October 25, 1915. Marie-Louise and Hector had six more children together.
Later Years and Becoming the Oldest Person
Marie-Louise did not return to the Quebec area until 1939. She settled back in her hometown of Kamouraska. Her second husband, Hector Meilleur, passed away in 1972 at age 93 from diabetes.
After Hector's death, Marie-Louise lived with one of her daughters for a while. When she needed more care, she moved to a special home for older people in Corbeil. Out of her twelve children, only four were still alive when she passed away. She had a very large family, including 85 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren, 57 great-great-grandchildren, and four great-great-great-grandchildren!
Marie-Louise stopped smoking when she was 102 years old in 1982. She decided to quit after she caught a cold. In 1986, someone asked her what her secret was for living such a long life. She said it was hard work. Marie-Louise was also a vegetarian.
She became the world's oldest living person on August 4, 1997. This happened after Jeanne Calment, a 122-year-old French woman, passed away. By her 117th birthday, Marie-Louise was too weak to talk much. She could only hear if someone spoke very loudly into her right ear.
Marie-Louise's Passing
Marie-Louise Meilleur passed away on April 16, 1998, in Corbeil. She was 117 years old. She died from a blood clot. One of her sons was living in the same nursing home at the time. Her oldest living daughter, Gabrielle Vaughan, was ninety years old. Gabrielle passed away in 2004 when she was 96. Marie-Louise was buried next to her second husband in Swisha, where she had lived before.
After Marie-Louise Meilleur passed away, an American woman named Sarah Knauss (who lived from 1880 to 1999) became the oldest living person in the world.
