Marie Therese Jane Cassidy, born in 1955, is a very important scientist. She is a pathologist, which means she studies diseases and how people die. She also used to be on the TV show Dancing with the Stars Ireland. From 2004 to 2018, Dr. Cassidy was the top pathologist for Ireland. She was the first woman ever to have this job! Today, she teaches about forensic medicine at two big universities. These are the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and Trinity College, Dublin.

Early Life and Learning
Marie Cassidy was born in 1955. Her birthplace was Rutherglen, a town near Glasgow, Scotland. Her grandparents had moved there from County Donegal in Ireland. Marie Cassidy now lives in London. She is married and has two children.
Studying Medicine
Dr. Cassidy went to the University of Glasgow. She studied medicine there. She finished her studies in January 1978.
Her Amazing Career
In 1985, Marie Cassidy became a member of the Royal College of Pathologists. In the same year, she became a forensic pathologist. This means she was the first full-time female forensic pathologist in the United Kingdom.
Working as a Professor
Before moving to Ireland, she was a professor. She taught forensic medicine at the University of Glasgow. In 1998, she moved to Ireland. There, she became the Deputy State Pathologist.
Becoming State Pathologist
In January 2004, Dr. Cassidy got a very important job. She was chosen to be the State Pathologist for Ireland. She took over from Professor John Harbison. This made her the first woman to hold this top position in Ireland.
Teaching at Universities
Dr. Cassidy also teaches at two well-known universities. She is a Professor of Forensic Medicine. She teaches at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. She also teaches at Trinity College, Dublin.
Helping the United Nations
Marie Cassidy has also worked for the United Nations. She helped to identify people who died in war crimes. This important work took place in Bosnia.
Retirement and Consulting
On September 7, 2018, Dr. Cassidy announced her retirement. She stepped down from her role as State Pathologist of Ireland. She also worked as a consultant for a TV crime show called Taggart. She also gave advice to Irish crime writer Alex Barclay. A character in the book The Human Body is even based on her!
Life After Retirement
After retiring in 2018, Dr. Cassidy started working on TV shows. She hosted a series for RTÉ called Dr. Cassidy's Casebook. In this show, she looked back at some of her most famous cases. In August 2022, she was part of a documentary. It was called Cold Case Collins. This show looked at the death of Irish leader, Michael Collins. It marked 100 years since he died.
Dancing with the Stars
In January 2023, Dr. Cassidy appeared on TV again. She was on the sixth season of Dancing with the Stars Ireland. She danced with a partner named Stephen Vincent. They were the second couple to leave the show. They finished in 10th place.
