Marie Elizabeth Cornelissen was born in Paris, France. Her parents sent her to England for part of her education. She attended the St. Martin's Lane Academy. Later, she studied at the famous Royal Academy in London. This is where many great artists learn their craft.

In 1877, Marie started showing her artwork to the public. That same year, she married the painter John Seymour Lucas. After her marriage, she became known professionally as Marie Seymour Lucas.
