Marie of Artois (born in 1291) was an important noblewoman from the Middle Ages. She was also known as Marie d'Artois in French and Maria van Artesië in Dutch. She became the Margravine (a type of noble title) of Namur when she married John I, Marquis of Namur in 1310. She held this title until 1330.
Later, Marie became the ruler of Namur for a short time. This happened between 1337 and 1340. She was a regent, meaning she ruled on behalf of her son, William I, who was too young to rule by himself. Marie also owned a place called Méraude (Merode). She bought it in 1342 from John the Blind, who was the King of Bohemia. She kept Méraude until 1353, when she gave it to her son William I. Marie of Artois passed away on January 22, 1365.

Marie's Early Life and Marriage
Marie of Artois was born in 1291. She was the fourth daughter of Philip of Artois and Blanche of Brittany. Her family was part of the noble House of Artois.
Marriage to John I of Namur
Marie married John I, Marquis of Namur. John was the son of Guy of Dampierre, who was the Count of Flanders and Marquis of Namur. John's mother was Isabelle of Luxembourg.
Their marriage was officially agreed upon in Paris on March 6, 1310. This agreement was confirmed in Poissy in January 1313. As part of her marriage, John gave Marie the castle of Wijnendale in Flanders. This gift was approved by the Count of Flanders, Robert III, in 1313.
Marie became a widow in 1330 when her husband, John I, passed away.
Becoming Regent of Namur
In 1337, Marie's youngest son, William I, became the Marquis of Namur. He was only fifteen years old at the time, which was considered too young to rule on his own. Because of this, Marie became the Regent of Namur. She ruled the region until William reached adulthood in 1340.
Marie's Children
Marie of Artois and John I, Marquis of Namur, had many children. Several of their sons became rulers of Namur after their father. Their daughter, Blanche, became a queen.
