Blanche of Brittany (born 1271, died 1327) was an important noblewoman from the Middle Ages. She was the daughter of John II, Duke of Brittany, and his wife, Beatrice of England. Blanche was also known as Blanche de Dreux. Her mother, Beatrice, was the daughter of King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence. This made Blanche a granddaughter of an English king!

Blanche's Family Life

Blanche married Philip of Artois in Paris sometime after November 1281. Philip was the son of Robert II of Artois. Together, Blanche and Philip had seven children.

Blanche's Children

  • Margaret (1285–1311): She married Louis, Count of Évreux in 1301.
  • Robert III of Artois (1287–1342): He married Joan of Valois in 1318.
  • Isabella (1288–1344): She became a nun at Poissy.
  • Joan (1289 – after 1350): She married Gaston I, Count of Foix, in 1301 in Senlis.
  • Othon (died 1291): He passed away when he was very young.
  • Marie (1291 – 1365): She became the Lady of Merode. Marie married John I, Marquis of Namur in Paris in 1309. She was the mother of Blanche of Namur.
  • Catherine (1296–1368): She married John II of Ponthieu, Count of Aumale. They had a daughter named Joan of Ponthieu.

The Artois Inheritance Dispute

Blanche's husband, Philip, was injured while fighting in the Battle of Furnes. He never fully recovered from his wounds and died about a year later. Because Philip died before his father, his family's land, Artois, was given to his sister, Mahaut, instead of his son, Robert.

This led to a big disagreement later on. Robert believed he should have inherited Artois. However, he never became the official Count of Artois. When Mahaut died, the land passed to her daughter, Joan II, Countess of Burgundy.

Other Family Connections

Blanche's daughter Margaret was the mother of Philip III of Navarre. Philip III later married Joan II of Navarre. Blanche also had a sister named Marie, who was married to Guy IV, Count of Saint-Pol.

Blanche of Brittany passed away on March 19, 1327. She died at the Chateau de Bois-de-Vincennes and was buried in a church in Paris called the Couvent des Jacobins. This church has since been torn down.
