Louis of Évreux was a French prince born on May 3, 1276, in Paris. He was the only son of King Philip III of France and his second wife, Marie of Brabant. This made him the half-brother of King Philip IV of France. Louis passed away on May 19, 1319, also in Paris.
Who Was Louis of Évreux?
Louis was a prince, which means he was a son of a king. He was known for being a thoughtful and calm person. Unlike his half-brother Charles of Valois, who was often involved in political plots, Louis preferred a quieter life. He was, however, very close to his nephew, Philip V of France.
His Family Life
Louis of Évreux married a noblewoman named Margaret of Artois. She was the daughter of Philip of Artois and the sister of Robert III of Artois. Together, Louis and Margaret had five children:
- Marie (born 1303 – died 1335): She married John III, Duke of Brabant in 1311.
- Charles (died 1336): He became the Count of Étampes. Charles married Maria de la Cerda, Lady of Lunel.
- Philip III of Navarre (born 1306 – died 1343): He later became the King of Navarre. Philip married Joan II of Navarre.
- Margaret (born 1307 – died 1350): She married William XII of Auvergne in 1325.
- Joan (born 1310 – died 1370): She married Charles IV of France, who was the King of France.
